Celebrate the Contributions of Women This Month
Since 1987, March has been designated as Women’s History Month to highlight the contributions and achievements women have made in a variety of fields including literature, filmmaking, art, engineering and science. During March, we can reflect on the often overlooked contributions of women in U.S. history.
Women’s History Month began in 1978 when the Sonoma, California school district participated in Women’s History Week during the week of March 8th. March 8th is International Women’s Day. The celebration included school presentations, an essay contest and a parade.
Over the years, Women’s History Month has had a theme that corresponds to that year. In 1987, it was “Generations of Courage, Compassion, and Conviction.” This year’s theme is, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” It is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.
Purple is the color of International Woman’s Day. To show solidarity, you are encouraged to wear purple on March 8th.
