School Readiness

For most kids, summer means no school, no homework and long days filled with sunshine, laughter and relaxation. But, having a few months off from school can also lead to the summer slide. Summer slide is a term used by educators to describe the loss of knowledge and academic skills learned during the school year. The good news is you can ward off the summer slide and get ready for the new school year just by visiting the Library.

Stop by one of our branches, pick up some great reads and encourage your child to read this summer. Whether it’s the newspaper, a magazine or book, it all counts! Having a great read on hand will help prevent your child from experiencing the summer slide. We also have picture books, beginning readers, chapter books, comics and magazines for kids that can be accessed with your electronic device. No matter where you go, whether to the park or on a road trip, make sure to have reading materials on hand to keep your children entertained.

If you run out of ideas on how to keep boredom at bay, join our Summer Reading Program! Library members of all ages are invited to get lost in a universe of stories. This year we are playing bingo! Parents are encouraged to join and set an example for your children. Register at any Palm Beach County Library System location, Bookmobile stop, or use the online registration form to receive a bingo card.

This month you can also attend classes, events and activities that encourage the love of reading, learning and knowledge. Parents can learn about the immunizations that are needed before their children can go back to school. There are activities that will help your preschooler prepare for kindergarten. Teens can attend activities that will help prepare them for the ACT™ or SAT®. We also have plenty of online resources to help students prepare for the school year. Check out Tutor.com to get help from certified tutors who can help with math, science, social studies, and language arts. LearningExpress has skills-building exercises for elementary, middle and high school students. The best part is they’re all free, so check them out on our online research page.
