Friends Annual Meeting
Join us for a short business meeting and election of officers followed by special guest speaker Michael Mayo, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel dining critic and Eat Beat blogger. Preregister by Nov 01. Refreshments provided. (2 hr.)
“The only thing I love more than writing is eating,” says Mayo, who joined the newspaper in 1989.
He dropped his notepad and picked up his critic’s fork in June 2016 after 14 years as the paper’s metro news columnist and 13 years as a sports reporter and columnist. Mayo has won numerous national, regional and state journalism awards for his plain-spoken restaurant reviews, lively food blog and also for the 11,000-member “Let’s Eat, South Florida” Facebook group.
Mayo was back on the news beat after the 2018 Parkland school massacre and was part of the Sun-Sentinel’s team awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and the 2019 Scripps Howard Awards for Breaking News coverage.
He previously worked at The Boston Globe and the Spartanburg Herald-Journal in South Carolina. Brooklyn-born, he attended New York City’s Stuyvesant High and graduated from Tufts University with a degree in Soviet and Eastern European Studies. He also studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Mayo lives in Dania Beach, has a 13-year-old daughter, and is always on the hunt for good pizza and pastrami.
