NASA & the Library System Celebrate 50 Years

Throughout the year the Library System is celebrating 50 years of providing services to the residents of Palm Beach County. This summer the theme for the Library System’s summer reading program is space. Throughout the summer, there will be activities that focus on space including documentaries, lectures, STEAM programs and more.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System.

NASA is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon and made this famous statement, “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.” Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the lunar surface while Michael Collins remained in orbit around the moon.

The Apollo program was the result of President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to NASA and the nation to land astronauts on the moon by the end of the decade. Kennedy’s original vision for the moon landings was to create a joint venture between the United States and the Soviet Union as a way to work peacefully together. But Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev turned down Kennedy’s offer and instead fueled the international rivalry. The program became a demonstration of America’s technological, economic and political superiority to communism. It met its goals in those areas when the United States landed astronauts on the moon before the Soviet Union could.

From 1968 to 1972, American astronauts made 11 spaceflights. During the first four missions, the astronauts tested the equipment. Six of the other seven flights landed on the moon. The Apollo 13 mission, made famous by the movie starring Tom Hanks, experienced a malfunction and the crew had to travel around the moon while NASA scientists tried to find a way to bring them back and land safely on Earth. A total of 12 astronauts walked on the moon.
